Peter Capaldi, unabridged, 12 hours 22 minutes — complete, solo, and the Penguin Modern Classics edition. Several of the listings below are not the novel. Philip Glenister at 5h51 is honestly marked abridged, and it is less than half the length of the recording we recommend. Karen Kovacs at 2h40 is an ELT graded reader — the text rewritten to a controlled vocabulary at CEFR B1 — and its title, heading and byline all say so. The Audible Original with Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo, Andrew Scott and Tom Hardy is a dramatisation: excellent, star-studded, and 3h27 rather than 12h22. The one that does not tell you is the Tim Pigott-Smith listing at 1 hour 53. Its credit names only Pigott-Smith and Audible's listing data marks it unabridged, so it looks like a short solo reading of the book — but its own description says it is a BBC Radio 4 drama starring Christopher Eccleston, Tim Pigott-Smith and Pippa Nixon. This page called it a mislabelled unabridged reading until 11 September 2026; it is a radio play.
