Which recording should you buy?

Audible often sells three or four different recordings of the same book under near-identical listings. Buying a three-hour abridgement when you wanted the twelve-hour novel is an easy and irritating mistake.

The trap almost nobody knows about

Some classics — Christie especially — are also sold as graded readers: simplified retellings written for people learning English, at levels such as A2, B1 or B2. They are legitimate products, but they are not the novel. The text has been rewritten to a controlled vocabulary.

The problem is how they list. Death on the Nile has one that appears in search as “Death on the Nile”, with nothing under the title but “B1”, runs three hours, and costs the same single credit as the complete novel. The web address and the product page heading are just the title, and “B1” means nothing unless you already know the scale. At three or four hours it looks exactly like an ordinary abridgement.

How to check: look at the line under the title, then read the description. Some graded readers say what they are in the title — a level, or “(Adaptation)” — but on the Collins Christie readers we have opened, the title is the book’s own name and the level sits on the line beneath it, sometimes spelled out, often just a code such as B1 or B2+. The description is where it says it was written for learners of English — on the Collins Christie readers, in a line about bringing Christie to English language learners. If the runtime is three to four hours for a full-length novel, it is worth the ten seconds.

Non-fiction has its own version of this: unofficial “Summary of…” audiobooks that list beside the real book and cost the same credit. All the variations, and how to spot them →

How to spot the difference yourself

Check the running time before anything else. It is the most reliable signal on the page. If one edition is half the length of another, treat the short one as something other than the complete book until its listing shows otherwise — it may be an abridgement, a dramatisation, a graded reader for learners of English or a summary, whatever the title does or does not say.

"Full cast" means a dramatisation, not a reading. Often excellent, but it is an adaptation with actors and sound design, not the text of the book.

Older is not automatically worse — but a recent re-recording usually has better sound, and for a long series it is more likely to be complete in one voice.

Every runtime on these pages is Audible UK's own figure, checked by hand.
