Which Mysterious Affair at Styles recording should you buy?
Poirot's first case is sold several ways under the same title: one long-standing complete reading, a star-cast Audible adaptation, a BBC radio play, a Collins retelling for English learners, an AI voice, and two newer readings — one of them marked unabridged at a length that does not fit.

Short answer
Hugh Fraser for the novel: complete, and read by the actor who played Hastings on television, which suits a book Hastings narrates. The Peter Dinklage edition is an Audible Original adaptation by Anna Lea with a large cast — a play, not the text, and its byline says so. The BBC edition with John Moffatt is a radio play too. Roger May's listing is a Collins graded reader: the title is plain and only "Level 5, ELT Reader" on the line beneath it says what it is. Two newer readings need care: Rachel Bietti's is marked unabridged but runs well short of Fraser, and its listing does not say why; Vishal Menon's runs longer than Fraser and is complete as far as its listing says, though Audible credits a second author in its byline without explaining him. The AI Voice Kokoro edition says in its first sentence that it is narrated by an AI voice.
The recordings, compared
| Narrator | Length | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hugh Fraser Our pick | 5 hrs 57 mins | Complete novel | The complete novel, read by the actor who played Hastings on television. |
| Vishal Menon | 6 hrs 37 mins | Unabridged | Listed as complete, from an Indian publisher, with the title filed as "Mysterious Affair at Styles, The". The byline credits a second author, Thibaut Meurisse, and the listing does not say why. |
| Rachel Bietti | 4 hrs 41 mins | Unabridged | Marked unabridged, but 1 hr 16 mins shorter than the shortest complete reading here, 79% of it. The listing does not explain the gap and we have not established the cause. |
| Peter Dinklage, Himesh Patel, Harriet Walter and a full cast | 3 hrs 53 mins | Audible Original, full cast | An adaptation, not the novel: Anna Lea is credited for the adaptation in the byline, and Dinklage plays Poirot in a large cast. |
| Full cast with John Moffatt, Philip Jackson, Simon Williams | 2 hrs 13 mins | BBC full-cast dramatisation | A BBC radio play with Moffatt as Poirot. Nothing in the title says so. |
| Roger May | 3 hrs 37 mins | Collins graded reader (Level 5) | NOT the novel: a Collins graded reader for people learning English, retold in simplified language. The title is plain; "Level 5, ELT Reader" on the line beneath it and the first sentence of the description are what give it away. |
| AI Voice Kokoro | 7 hrs 20 mins | AI narration (Virtual Voice) | The text read by a synthetic voice. The listing says so in its first sentence. |
